Pruning the Easy Way

According to the dictionary pruning is:

1. To cut off or remove dead or living parts or branches of (a plant, for example) to improve shape or growth.

2. To remove or cut out as superfluous.

3. To reduce: prune a budget.

v.intr.

To remove what is superfluous or undesirable.

As such we can say that pruning is the way we make our plants look better and healthier. By pruning your plants will be healthier, stronger, safer and more attractive.

Now that Spring is on its way it's time for nature to come back alive (Best pruning shear). Some say that the best time to start pruning your trees is in April. Trees and shrubs need their annual pruning as it helps them stay healthy and in good shape.

Of course, not every tree and shrub should be pruned at the same time, as each type has its own proper pruning time. Pruning at the wrong time of year may result in fewer flowers and/or fruits; it may even shorten the life of your plant.

When to prune? Hardwood trees and conifers are best pruned in late fall, but the flowering plants should be pruned in spring.

PS: Anytime you see your garden overgrown by trees, bushes or shrubs it's time for some pruning - removal of dead branches can be done anytime.

Don't forget your trusty tools and start bringing the artist out of you: hand shears, loppers, pruning shears and puncture-proof gloves.

Pruning should be only performed when necessary, otherwise great damage can be done - influence the growth and health of a plant, damage its beauty or even shortening its life.

There shouldn't be any problems when you need to remove dead branches, crowded limbs, diseased or insect-infested wood.

Pruning can best be used to encourage trees to develop a strong structure and to enhance the natural form of plants (top pruning shear for roses). However special attention should be paid to the plant's natural form in order not to force it to grow in an unnatural form and damage its production of flowers and fruits.

Reasons for pruning:

• Maintain plant health

• Encourage development and stimulate growth

• Shaping and improving plant appearance

• Removal of dead branches or hazardous trees

Pruning cuts should be made just outside the branch collar at a node. The cuts should be made so that only branch tissue is removed and stem tissue is not damaged. The quality of pruning cuts can be evaluated by examining pruning wounds after one growing season.

If you are afraid to cut too much or cut to deep, attend a pruning workshop and you'll see that they will bring out the artist in you in no time. If you still think it's just too much for you, turn to your local landscaping services and they will do the job for you.

Avoid pruning plants, especially trees that are touching or near utility lines, you should instead consult the local utility company or hire professional services
